Agatha Achom
Artist Bio
Agatha Achom (b.1996) is an intuitive abstract artist based in Kampala, Uganda. From a young age, she was always drawn to art. Although she studied other disciplines at university, initially pursued Architecture (dropped out in Year 2) and later earned a degree in Tourism Management, her true passion for art remained undeniable. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Achom embraced her creative calling, dedicating herself to painting and self-teaching. She began her practice in realism and portraiture, influenced by the visual language common in Uganda.
However, her creative path took a transformative turn in 2024 when she chose to step away from creating art that was popular locally but didn’t reflect her true artistic voice. She found freedom in intuitive abstract art, comprised primarily of random chaotic patterns and textures. She honed her craft through exploration, allowing her creativity to flow freely.
In abstraction, Achom found self-expression and the courage to embrace an unconventional path. Her highly expressive art comes to life through mixed media and a range of techniques on paper and canvas. The uncertainty of the final result and continuous experimentation fuel her inspiration.
For Achom, the greatest detail in her art is to leave something for the viewers to think about.
Intuition is at the heart of my practice. Since childhood I have always been curious, drawn to what lies beyond the familiar, yet often kept my inner thoughts and emotions to myself. Now, I translate and express them through intuitive abstract marks and forms where mystery, freedom, possibility, and curiosity fuel my creativity in abundance.
Although, I pursued other disciplines at university, a persistent voice kept drawing me back to art and I chose to surrender to that inner guidance. By following my instincts, I’ve learned to embrace uncertainty and trust the process, allowing meaning to emerge naturally, both in my art and in my life.
